On Thursday October 2, the William Monroe varsity volleyball team hosted the Charlottesville Black Knights in a Jefferson District match up. The Dragons came into this game on a roll winning their last four district games in a row.
On Tuesday, September 30, Monroe defeated the Louisa Lions three games to zero.  All three games were close all the way up to the end.
The first game Monroe won by a score of 25-22, the second game was 25-18, and the third was 25-20.
Leading the Dragons on Tuesday night was Bethany Leake who had seven digs, and two service points. Alex Cave helped with nine kills, seven service points, and two blocks. Also, Melanie Lamb added 17 assists, 14 service points, and two blocks.
On Thursday the games between Monroe and Charlottesville would not be quite as close.
In the first game Monroe quickly jumped out to an early lead 12-5. The Lady Dragons would not look back from there, as they went on a 9-2 run to take a commanding lead 21-7.
Monroe would put away the Black Knights with a final score of 25-9 and take a 1-0 overall lead in games.
The second game would start out much like the first, as Monroe dominated their way to a 12-1 lead. Within what seemed liked a matter of minutes, the lead was pushed to 21-4 on great play all around by the Dragons.
As game two came to an end, the Dragons had won with a blowout score of 25-6. Monroe looked to sweep Charlottesville heading into game three.
Not to go down without a fight, the Black Knights kept the third game close throughout. Midway through the game, Monroe found themselves up just 14-12 with all the momentum on Charlottesville’s side.
However, the Dragons would withstand any Charlottesville pressure, as they would go on an 11-4 run to end the game. With the win, Monroe would complete the sweep of Charlottesville, three games to zero.
In an interview with head coach D. Hoffman, she said, “We got a chance to try new things. Overall it was fun.“
She would also say, “We can’t take any team lightly, we have to come out every game with the need to step it up and get the win.“
Leading the Dragons was Emily Inzana with 21 service points, and 15 assists. Sarah Moyer had five kills, and Danielle Williamson would add seven service points, along with three kills. Kate Puryear also added eight service points, five kills, and a block.
With the win Monroe improves to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in district play. Monroe will face the always-tough Western Albemarle Warriors on October 7.
