Thursday night in Orange County, the William Monroe Dragons defeated the Hornet’s softball team, 4-3.
The Hornets started the game off in the first inning with a single by sophomore Paige Pritchett and a triple by freshman Michala Sacra. The Dragons protected the plate, and a close out at home prevented Pritchett from scoring.
In the third inning, junior Lauren Thompson started the Dragons rally with a single. A nicely placed bunt by junior, Jessica Morris, moved Thompson into scoring position on third. Both Morris and Thompson were able to score off of their teammate, junior Melanie Lamb’s double, bringing the score to 2-0 in the top of the third.
In the top of the fifth, the Dragons were at work again when Morris hit a single. Morris was able to steal second while Lamb was up next at bat. Lamb hit a single, and an overthrow to first allowed Morris to come home from second, upping the score, 3-0. Junior Bethany Leake was up next, and smacked the ball away for a triple, bringing Lamb home and raising the score 4-0.
In the sixth, runs were scored by Orange’s Pritchett, Megan Roberts, and Sacra closing the gap, 4-3. In the seventh, the Dragons ended the game with an out at third to win.
Assistant Coach for Monroe, Eileen Oliver, complimented, “It was an exciting game. Both teams played very well”.
The win improved Greene’s record to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in the district
