As another year of high school comes to an end, so does another season of spring sports. At the same time, the high school career of many seniors also comes to an end.
For William Monroe spring sports, this year is no exception.
The varsity girl’s soccer team will be saying goodbye to five seniors this year.
Heather Meslar, Alicia Garcia, Amber Jones, Shadiah Lahham, and Ashley Hogue finished their Dragon soccer careers with a loss in the first round of the Jefferson District tournament.
The Lady Dragons were unable to score a victory this season as they went 0-16 overall and 0-12 in the district. Coaches Daniel Bryant and Glenn MacKay will have a much more senior-led team next year, as they will have eight juniors returning.
The varsity boy’s soccer team will be parting with just four seniors this year. Vincent Sweeney, Jake Gearhart, Joshua Beeman, and Brandon Clayton will be graduating this June.
As a team, boy’s soccer finished their season 4-11-2 overall and 3-9 in the district. Just like girls soccer Coach Roy Farner will have a much older team next year as he has eleven juniors moving up to be seniors.
Varsity softball is fortunate enough to be saying goodbye to just one senior this year. Brittaney Shifflett will be the only Lady Dragon not returning next spring.
Softball finished the season 10-12 overall and 6-6 in the district. Their season came to an end in a tough loss to Orange in the Jefferson District tournament last Tuesday, May 20.
Coach Salita Sullivan and the Lady Dragons will be looking forward to getting back to the top of the district next year. With good pitching and more experience, the Dragons should find themselves doing well.
The Varsity baseball team will be losing five players heading off to college at the beginning of fall.
Alex Cullen, Shane Racer, Aaron Shifflett, Josh Hickman and Shannon Estes all will be turning in their Dragon jerseys for good.
Coach Mark Arrington and the team finished their season 6-14-1 overall and 4-8 in the district. Their season came to an end with a loss to Fluvanna in the first round of the Jefferson District tournament.
As with all of the other Monroe varsity teams, the baseball team was no exception to being young; Coach Arrington will have eight juniors returning to lead the Dragons next spring.
In another note: the track and field team will be saying goodbye to just one senior, Christina Proffit.
Next spring should be a very exciting one for William Monroe sports, as all the teams will be older and will have much more experience in senior leadership.
