A trial date for the Greene County woman charged with having sexual intercourse with William Monroe High School football players will be set at 9 a.m. today in Greene County General District Court.
Tammy Harlow Cox, 39, of 3543 Celt Road in Stanardsville, has been charged with two felony counts of taking indecent liberties with a child while in a custodial or supervisory relationship, and three misdemeanor counts of causing or rendering children delinquent.
Cox was arrested Friday, October 3, according to a statement released by Major Randall Snead of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation of Cox began as a result of a locker room incident at WMHS.
Last week, the Record reported that two varsity football players had been involved in the hazing of teammates in a locker room prior to the beginning of this school year. The incident, which occurred in August while the players were practicing for the coming season, was first reported to Superintendent of Schools Dave Jeck by a mother on Monday, September 15.
On Wednesday, September 17, Coach Tom Hoffman met with football players to review rules of character and conduct. It was during that meeting that three players informed Hoffman of “inappropriate conduct” by a parent. Hoffman relayed the report to his immediate supervisor, Activities Director Katie Brunelle, who then reported to WMHS Principal Mike Jamerson. He reported it to Jeck.
Brunelle, Assistant Superintendent Deborah Brown, and WMHS Assistant Principal Seth Muraskin investigated the matter.
“After discussions with several student athletes - all minors - there was consistency with the information shared. It was determined that it was a matter that needed to be handled by the Sheriff’s Department,“ Brown told the Record last week. She added that the “magnitude of the incident”—meaning, among other things, over what span of time the conduct has occurred and whether it’s limited to current students or also students who have already graduated from the high school - was unknown at that time.
The information was turned over to the Sheriff’s Office on September 19.
“An in-depth investigation was then launched … numerous interviews (were) conducted and search warrants executed,“ Snead wrote in his news release.
Brown concluded her investigation of the hazing incident Tuesday, September 23. Several players were disciplined, one was expelled and the matter was turned over to the Sheriff’s Office, where it is still under investigation.
“An assault on school grounds is mandated by the Commonwealth to be reported to local law enforcement in the jurisdiction in which it occurred,“ Snead wrote in his October 3 release.
He asks that anyone with any further information regarding this or any other incident call the Greene County Sheriff’s Office at 434-985-2222.
