GUEST EDITORIAL: Will Virtual Public School Become a Reality in Greene?
On Thursday night, the Greene County Public Schools held a meeting to introduce parents to a program they hope to offer in the upcoming school year.
Another parent information meeting scheduled to discuss this “virtual public school” option is July 22, 1:00 pm at Ruckersville Elementary School.
It’s a cross between public school and homeschool. The advantage? For a student who doesn’t fit the academic mold, it offers individualized placement at his or her level. For parents who homeschool, it represents a free education, school support, and access to all public school activities. For the school, additional students result in additional tax dollars.
Technically, the students will be enrolled in public school, but the actual learning can take place anywhere, as much of the college-bound curriculum is online. Each student will also receive a hefty package of books and materials, free of charge. A certified teacher will oversee the program, and the student remains accountable to the schools through scheduling, testing, etc.
The provider of this standards- and mastery-based curriculum is K12 (http://www.k12.com). Individualized learning based on placement tests ensure that students are working at their level of understanding and mastery. This rigorous, accredited program is designed to maximize each child’s academic potential.
While some homeschool families will prefer to maintain their current independence and flexibility in curriculum choice, K12 becomes a viable option to families who feel ill-equipped to teach their children at home. With enough interest, the Greene County Academy of Virtual Learning may bridge the gap between public school and home education.
