American Legion

Blue Ridge Foothills Conservancy

Coin Clubs
The Monticello Coin Club meets monthly on the 2nd Thursday of each month.  The Blue Ridge Coin Club meets monthly on the last Tuesday.  They both meet at 7 p.m. at the Golden Corral on Route 29 in Charlottesville. Four County Players

Girl Scouts
The Girl Scouts are dedicated to helping girls build character and gain skills for success in the real world.  Our program goals include helping girls develop “strong values, leadership skills, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self worth that will serve them all their lives.”

We have many troops at different age and program levels here in Greene.  The times and meeting locations vary with each individual troop.  Meeting places include schools, churches, and private residences.

GRACE
The Greene Alliance of Church and Community Efforts (GRACE) works with the Dept. of Social Services, Skyline CAP, JABA, Region 10, churches, businesses and civic groups in our community to help county residents in need.  We empower individuals and families with immediate or long-term needs by connecting them with appropriate agency providers or communicating their specific needs to our network of volunteers who may donate an item or service.

Each week in the Record, “Community Connections” highlights current need requests received by GRACE in hopes of matching those needs with readers who are able to fulfill them.  Please contact GRACE at 985-6792 to offer assistance or to make a need known.  The office is located at Stanardsville Baptist Church, 103 Madison Road, and is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The answering machine is checked regularly.

Greene Care Clinic

A nonprofit free clinic that uses local volunteer doctors to see Greene County residents who do not have health insurance and are on a limited income.  Located in the Greene County Library Building and open on Mondays at 6 p.m.  We provide a medical exam, prescriptions and a limited lab for qualified patients. Call for appointment or walk-in to be seen.

Greene County 4-H Clubs

Greene County Democratic Committee

The Greene County Democratic Committee exists to promote Democratic Party principles in Greene County, to reach out to supporters and independent voters and register new Democratic voters, and to provide local organizational support to help elect candidates to state and national office. Greene County Farm Bureau
Greene County Farm Bureau is proud to be part of Farm Bureau of Virginia which is one of the largest lobbying organizations for farmers in the nation. We offer many services to our members and provide all lines of insurance to meet the needs of our members. Our insurance agents are Charles W. Shifflett, Lutcf, and C. Nathan Wickline. We also are a broker for Anthem Insurance. Call Sandra Shifflett for your health care needs. Tammy Eppard is one of our member’s service specialists. The president of Greene County Farm Bureau is Joanne G. Burkholder and she has a dedicated board of 10 additional members. The Women’s Committee is very active in the community. Greene County Historical Society

Founded in 1978, the Society’s major function is to discover and collect material that may help to establish or illustrate the history of the area: its exploration, settlement, development and activities in peace and war; its progress in population, wealth, education, arts, science, agriculture, manufacture, trade and transportation.

Membership is $10 per year ($15 per year for a family membership), and all are welcome. Members receive the Greene Magazine and notification of programs and events.

Greene County Lions Club

Greene County Quilters
Contact: Jackie Pamenter (990-1958). Usually meets at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at the Greene County Extension Office on Route 33 Business east of Stanardsville. Call first to confirm meeting. As a sewing circle, the group makes quilts and exchanges ideas and information on quilts and quilting. All levels of quilting experience are welcome.

Greene County Republican Committee

We plan to have guest speakers each month and have invited each of the candidates running for the Republican primary to attend. We are growing our Republican base in Greene County and invite anyone who is interested to attend our meetings.

Greene County Ruritan Club
Jerry Gore 985-7379 The Ruritan Club is a civic organization whose purpose is to create a better understanding between people and, through volunteer community service, make the area a better place in which to live and work. The Ruritans’ slogan is “Fellowship, goodwill and community service.” Among the services performed by the club are:
• performing a county-wide road cleanup twice a year,
•providing scholarships,
•providing financial help to other local activities,
•running the Farmers’ Market,
•running the horseshoe tournament at the Greene County Fair,
•sponsoring the formation and activities of the William Monroe Community Service Club at the High School,
•completed construction of a large picnic shelter at the Community Park, which is now in use.

Recent projects include allocating funds for a matching grant for improvements at the Greene County Community Park and donating funds for the equipment storage building at the high school football field. Greene County Taxpayers Association Inc.

Mission statement: Realizing that Greene County has many people on limited incomes and a growing number of senior citizens, the Greene County Taxpayers Association has been formed to encourage and promote responsible government that will seriously take steps to curtail overspending and taxation by responding to the realities of existing, limited and future county resources.

Meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the American Legion/Greene Co. Taxpayers Building on Rt. 230, north of Stanardsville.

Greene County TRIAD

TRIAD is a partnership between the Greene Co. Sheriff’s office, the Jefferson Area Board for Aging, and local seniors and senior providers working together to maintain an open line of communication and ongoing education on issues affecting seniors (anyone over the age of 50). Over the past year our programs have included: fire extinguisher training, “file of life” training, tax information for seniors, rescue squad services, and local scam alerts.

Greene Education Foundation
(GEF) is an independent, nonprofit 502(c) 3 organization dedicated to supporting public education in Greene County. Our mission is to further enrich educational experience of the children and educators of Greene County Schools. Through funding creative instructional grants for teachers, students, scholarships, and a specially designed annual project, GEF seeks to provide some of the additional resources needed to facilitate and supplement quality educational programs for all students and assist the Greene County School District as it faces the challenges of a growing enrollment and limited funding. Tax-deductible donations can be designated to a specific fund such as Creative Instructional Grants or the Capital Improvement Project. Greene Future
Contact: Jim Rhoads (434-985-1182). The mission of Greene Future is to promote a sense of community and create a forum for open communication and exchange of ideas for all Greene County citizens. The organization sponsors programs on various topics related to county government and management with an emphasis on understanding how current events and issues can impact the future of the county.

Greene Hills Club

The Greene Hills Club is a semi-private club featuring an 18-hole golf course, an Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis courts and a restaurant. Founders of the club had a vision of a family-oriented and low cost recreational facility for local residents. The club opened in 1966 on property that was once a farm. There are buildings in use that pre-date the Civil War and the golf/pro shop is located in the original manor house. The historic charm of the property, the Blue Ridge Mountain views, beautiful ponds and rolling hills entice golfers and non-golfers alike. The club has a family-friendly atmosphere and there are organized events that create a sense of community among the members.

The Greene Hills Gators Swim Team, which competes in the Jefferson Swim League (www.jsl.org), consists of over 150 swimmers, members and non-members of the club, from Greene, Madison, Albemarle and Orange counties. This past season the Gators were runner-up in Division II for the second straight season. Golf teams from Madison County H.S., the Blue Ridge School and William Monroe H.S. claim Greene Hills Club as their home course. The WMHS golf team has won the Virginia High School State Golf Tournament twice and has come in second four times.

There are a variety of membership levels available, including family, single, social, weekday, and associate memberships. The club also subscribes to the Virginia State Golf Association’s VIP program that allows non-members to play for a nominal charge.

Madison-Greene Humane Society

Celia Dollarhide, President
The Piedmont Landowners Association was formed by landowners in Madison, Greene, Culpeper. Rappahannock and Orange counties who have an interests in learning more about responsible stewardship of forests and farmland from other landowners as well as a varity of experts in the area. The Association meets the last Monday of the month at the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office ( in the War Memorial Building, second floor) in Madison or at neighboring farms to observe demonstration or other projects. Membership is open to all.

Quinque Homemakers
Contact: Jimi Barnett (985-2671) A long-established group of ladies devoted to helping family and community. It is a small club, which is the last of the original Extension Club Homemakers Organization. Meetings are held once a month at the Greene County Extension Building on Route 33 Business east of Stanardsville.

Rappahannock Station Civil War Research Center

The Rappahannock Station Civil War Research Center is a nonprofit organization whose aim is to provide easy, free public access to genealogical data, unit history information, and individual soldier information (both Union and Confederate).

Rippin Run Garden Club

A federated garden club that endeavors to create a greater appreciation of flowers, trees and shrubs, and to stimulate interest and enjoyment in gardening and the fine art of flower arranging. We encourage civic planning and beautification; aid in the care and protection of native trees, plants, birds, water life and in the conservation of soil and water.

Meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Greene County Extension Building on U.S. 33 Business, east of Stanardsville.

Sons of Confederate Veterans
Contact: Jeff Sims (985-8496). Col. Waller Tazewell Patton Camp. Dedicated to the study of Confederate history, battlefield preservation, and Civil War site preservation. Open to male descendants of Confederate soldiers, sailors and statesmen.

Spotswood Trail Garden Club
Club President Pat Wilczek, 985-4444. The Spotswood Trail Garden Club meets at 12:30 p.m. at the Rescue Squad building on the third Wednesday of most months. Visitors and new members are always welcome. Each month, there is a program with stimulating and informative presentations by local experts in gardening. Some months, the members go on excursions to local nurseries or gardening events.

The Club was organized in January 1953, with eight founding members, and Mrs. Herbert Silvette as the first president. Fifty-four years later, the Club’s objectives are still to encourage the knowledge of gardening, to stimulate interest in county improvement, and to aid in the protection of native plants, birds and trees. Over the years, the Club has been outspoken in pursuit of these goals - for example: petitioning the county supervisors to provide a county dump, (1956); supporting anti-billboard initiatives (1964); working on projects to have junk cars removed, and to begin glass recycling (1974); and, since its inception, participating in the planning and planting of trees and shrubs for the county’s schools and administration buildings.

Since 1984, the Club has made the Christmas wreaths for County government offices, and members have worked with residents of Evergreene Assisted Living on garden therapy projects over many years.

Stanardsville Area Revitalization
*STAR* (Stanardsville Area Revitalization) is a public-private partnership that works with the Town of Stanardsville and Greene County to develop a stronger community spirit and improve the economic health of the area. Its motto, “Restoring its Vitality … Retaining its Charm … Helping its People” captures the purpose of the organization. *STAR* sponsors the annual Independence Day Parade, the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony and other community events.  *STAR* has received grant funds from VDOT to build two crosswalks with safety islands, and adjoining sidewalks, between the school complex and the shopping center, and additional funds to begin streetscape enhancements along Main Street.  It is currently applying for a large community and economic development grant to improve shopping and residential opportunities in the Town.  Four standing committees of local residents and a Board of Directors lead *STAR*’s work. Tuesday’s Table
Tuesday’s Table, a ministry providing a free meal to anyone in need, whether the need is economic, spiritual, fellowship, or whatever (no questions are asked) is held every Tuesday night from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Stanardsville United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, Court Street (across from the Courthouse) in downtown Stanardsville.  Food provided and prepared by Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church; Mt. Vernon, Stanardsville, Mountain View and Westover United Methodist Churches, Spring Hill Baptist Church and other service organizations. Limited delivery is available upon request. 

Women’s Club of Greene County
President: Marianne Shepard. P.O. Box 352, Stanardsville. Email: Meets on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at varying locations. The Club is closely involved in a number of service and charitable activities throughout Greene County. Their current projects include operating the Greene County Food Bank, overseeing a Christmas Gift Project for needy kids, awarding academic and technical scholarships for young women graduating from WMHS, and several others. The Club holds an annual fund-raiser in the form of a Craft Bazaar, held in early November and an annual spring yard sale to raise money for the Gift Project.
