It will soon be political convention season in America, as the Democratic Party meets Aug. 25-28 in Denver, and the Republican Party gathers Sept. 1-4 in Minneapolis. Some observers see these meetings as celebrations of democracy, others as outmoded events that no longer serve a constructive purpose. Whatever your opinion, you can use books from the library to learn more about the history of political conventions, revisit some of the most memorable conventions of the past century, and read about presidential elections.
On our recommended reading list are:
• Five Days in Philadelphia: The Amazing we Want Wilkie Convention of 1940 by Charles Peters
•Miami and the Siege of Chicago: An Informal History of the Republican and Democratic Conventions of 1968 by Norman Mailer
Campaigning for President by Jordan M. Wright
Everything You Think You Know about Politics-and why you’re Wrong by Kathleen Hall Jamieson
The World Almanac of Presidential Campaigns
The Way to Win: Taking the White House in 2008 by Mark Halperin
Check out the library’s Election 2008 website: jmrl.org/on-election2008.htm to find links to the official election websites, various media election centers, websites dealing with financial contributions, history of presidential elections, and a listing of Polling Sources: American Research Group, Gallup Poll, PollingReport.com, Zogby International.
Visit the Greene County Library and ask the friendly staff to help you find the information you want.
