The Greene Express Basketball Association has an opening for a Boys 16U coach. If interested in volunteering one to two evenings a week and tournament weekends please call 434-962-0095. Most tournaments played at home with limited travel. The coach must have knowledge of the sport and be able to direct, train, attend all practices, clinics and tournaments as it relates to the Boys 16U activities. The Greene Express is a nonprofit organization designed to help young men and ladies achieve their goals in the sport of basketball. May 1
Greene Library Book Discussion Group will meet Thursday, May 1 at 7 p.m. “The World Is Flat” by Thomas L. Friedman will be discussed; it’s an account of the great changes taking place in the modern world as a result of swift advances in technology and communications, including an explosion of wealth in India and China.

The Montpelier Daughters of the American Revolution will meet May 1 at 11 a.m. at Gordonsville United Methodist Church. A $13.50 luncheon reservation check needs to be received by the chapter treasurer by April 26. The program, “DAR… What it means to my life - The Significance of the DAR Insignia,” will be presented by Judy Surber, District VI Director. The Chapter Memorial Service will be conducted by the chaplain.

May 1-3
Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, Rt. 810, Dyke Road, will hold Spring Revival through Saturday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. with guest speaker, the Rev. Buster Payne. There will be special music each evening and a fellowship meal at 6 p.m. on Saturday before the final service. Come and join us for an old-time revival.

Blood is needed! The Women’s Committee of Greene County Farm Bureau is sponsoring the following blood drives in 2008. On May 1 from 3-7 p.m. in the Farm Bureau parking lot, Rt. 33; June 28 from 9 a.m.-12-noon in parking lot of Vo-Tech School; Sept. 11 from 3-7 p.m. and Nov. 13 from 3-7 p.m. inside Stanardsville Firehouse. Please donate - you just may save a life.

May 3
A church yard sale will be held Saturday, May 3 from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Stanardsville Baptist Church, Start your morning with breakfast biscuits and coffeecakes and end with lunch of chili, hot dogs, baked goods, coffee and soft drinks.  Browse a wide variety of household items for sale including furniture, books, toys and other items. Also spring/summer clothing for infants through adults. Sale to benefit the Women’s Missionary Union and Youth Group projects. Located in the church fellowship hall, lower level, Door #6. Follow the signs.

Comics at the library? Sure! Saturday, May 3, the Greene County Library is joining with Atlas Comics to celebrate Free Comic Book Day. Stop by the library from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to get your free comic book… while supplies last. All ages welcome; sponsored by the J-MRL Friends of the Library.

Breakfast buffet/bake and yard sale Saturday, May 3 at Nortonsville Church of God, 1505 Simmons Gap Road, Dyke; yard sale from 8 a.m. to 12-noon and the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Adults $5; children 6-10, $2.50 and children under five, free.

A golf tournament will be held at Greene Hills Country Club, Stanardsville, May 5 at 12-noon to benefit the Adam Fargo Memorial Field House, sponsored by William Monroe High School Community Service Club. All proceeds from this tournament will go directly to the field house funding. g. The Ruckersville Citizens Council meets Tuesday, May 6 in Ruckersville Fire Hall at 7 p.m. Our guest for the meeting will be Herb White, County Water Supply Plan engineering consultant. There will be no walk-in clinic on Wednesday, May 7 at Greene County Health Department.

Community Blood Drive event will be Wednesday, May 7 from 3-8 p.m. The VBS Bloodmobile will be at The Shops at the Best Western Charlottesville Airport Inn & Suites, Rt. 29 North, just past Airport Road on the right. The Spotswood Trail Garden Club will have its annual plant sale Saturday, May 10 from 8 a.m. to 12-noon at the Rescue Squad Building.

JABA Greene County Senior Center is holding a flea market fundraiser Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. to noon in the upper parking lot behind the JABA/Library building and the Lafayette Hotel just off Main Street in Stanardsville. Flea market spaces are 9 feet wide by 18 inches deep and cost $15 each. Reserve spaces by contacting Sandra Davis at 434-985-2047 or email: . The Habitat for Humanity spaghetti dinner will be Saturday, May 10, at Grace Episcopal Church from 5-7 p.m. Adults $7 and children 4-6, $4; carry out available. Regular and vegetarian lasagna also will be available.

There will be a Regional Transportation Summit to update our region’s long-range transportation plan, Saturday, May 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 12-noon, at Monticello High School, 1400 Independence Way, Charlottesville. The UnJAM 2035 Regional Summit, involving residents of Greene, Albemarle, Louisa, Fluvanna and Nelson counties, is hosted by the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission. Come out and support your local rescue squad volunteers Saturday, May 17 from 3-7 p.m. Activities will include tour of facility, children’s activities, blood pressure checks, extrication demo, raffles, door prizes and musical entertainment. The Quarterly Madison County Historical Society meeting will feature Maxine Weaver Crane speaking about her book, “Ask for Nothing.” This is a true story of a mother traveling west in the mid-1800s who left one of her children with a Madison family; a fascinating story involving three Madison families, the Deals, Yowells and Weavers. The meeting will be May 18, at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Madison County Office Building. Refreshments will follow in the Kemper Mansion and everyone is invited.

May 24
The 2008 Spring Hill Tour de Greene event will be Saturday, May 24 at 8 a.m. Run, walk, kid dash, bike ride; come and join Spring Hill May 24 at Dover Foxcroft Farm, as we run and bike our way to a better education for Greene County. All proceeds will benefit the Greene County Education Foundation and Habitat for Humanity of Greene.

During the month of May the Greene County Food Bank is requesting donations of cereal. Donations can be dropped off at Social Services at 10009 Spotswood Trail (old Rt. 33) Stanardsville, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Your tax-deductible money donations for the food bank can be mailed to the Woman’s Club of Greene County, P.O.
