The Greene County Young Farmers will sponsor a demonstration of an affordable solar-powered livestock watering system in operation at Epsewasson Farm located east of Stanardsville, on Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. sharp. To attend and or for directions call 434-985-1746.

The Madison Choral Society, directed by Judy Maxfield, will celebrate God’s gift of springtime with hymns and spiritual songs by John Rutter, Gabriel Faure, Johanna Haydn and others. The program titled “In Praise of Creation” will include a unique arrangement of “Amazing Grace” written by Bernice Walker, a member of our choral society. The program will conclude with a rousing spiritual arrangement of “Dry Bones” by Mark Hayes. The concerts are Friday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Caroline Street, Orange and Sunday, April 27 at 4 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Hoover Road, Haywood. Ruckersville Elementary School PTA yard sale will be Saturday, April 26 from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.; rain date is May 10.
Not your ordinary yard sale will be held at Shepherd of the Hills Church Social Hall from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26. This huge annual sale offers a wide variety of items; rain or shine (held indoors). Follow the signs from Rt. 33 west - one mile south on Rt. 633 (Amicus Road) to the church. Proceeds will benefit the “Caring for the Children” Christmas Gift Project of the Woman’s Club of Greene County.
Community yard sale and book fair Saturday, April 26 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Greene County Extension Office, located in the Greene County Office Building Annex on Spotswood Trail (Business Rt. 33 east of Stanardsville). Donations needed, call 985-5236.
Ashley Reynolds will be in concert at William Monroe High School, Stanardsville on April 26 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is $8 with proceeds benefiting the volunteer rescue squad. Purity Jam: a Christian, singer, songwriter, speaker, recipient of Pop Artist of the Year - 2006 (KCCM), in Times Cover Girl - May 2007 and 2007 Momentum Award Nominee. High school students in grades 9-12 learn about Ashley’s Purity Workshops as she talks with the youth.
The Red Cross will be offering free CPR courses (regular price is $75 per person) Saturday, April 26, Adult CPR/AED. The training courses are funded by a grant and are free to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations. Pre-registration required, call 434-979-7143 and ask for Brett Stauffer.
Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville will have a Dogwood Pancake Breakfast Saturday, April 26 from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 500 Park St., Charlottesville, in support of Boys and Girls Club of Charlottesville/Albemarle. Bring the whole family and eat before the Dogwood Festival Parade; food and drinks provided by Starbucks, Sam’s Club and Pepsi-Cola and the printed materials provided by MidAtlantic Printing and Kominer & Thomson. The Piedmont Landowners Association will meet Monday, April 28, at 7 p.m. at the Cooperative Extension Service Office at Church and Main Streets in Madison. A member of Northern Piedmont Beekeepers Association will be the featured speaker and will demonstrate the tools of the trade. The Piedmont Landowners Association was formed by landowners and friends from Culpeper, Greene, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties who have an interest in stewardship of forest and farmland. Teen Girls Book Group will meet at Greene County Library on Mondays, April 28, and May 19 from 7-8:30 p.m. Make new friends, discover new books; join us for our ongoing book group for teen girls ages 14 and up. Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, Rt. 810, Dyke Road, will hold Spring Revival Wednesday, April 30 through Saturday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. with guest speaker, the Rev. Buster Payne. There will be special music each evening and a fellowship meal at 6 p.m. on Saturday before the final service. Come and join us for an old-time revival.

During the months of April and May, the Madison-Greene Humane Society is offering free spays/neuters for feral cats (cats that cannot be handled). To schedule an appointment for these surgeries, call 540-948-3191. The Humane Society also has other low-cost spay/neuter programs available and will be happy to discuss those programs with those who are interested.

Would you like to get free tickets to see “To Kill A Mockingbird” at the Paramount Theater on May 1? As part of The Big Read, starting April 1 all branches of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library will have a quiz on the book. Return the completed quiz to your local library by April 18, to be entered into a prize-drawing for free tickets to the screening of the film. Two free tickets will be given at each branch. The Greene Express Basketball Association has an opening for a Boys 16U coach. If interested in volunteering one to two evenings a week and tournament weekends please call 434-962-0095. Most tournaments played at home with limited travel. The coach must have knowledge of the sport and be able to direct, train, attend all practices, clinics and tournaments as it relates to the Boys 16U activities. Greene Library Book Discussion Group will meet Thursday, May 1 at 7 p.m. “The World Is Flat” by Thomas L. Friedman will be discussed; it’s an account of the great changes taking place in the modern world as a result of swift advances in technology and communications, including an explosion of wealth in India and China.
The Montpelier Daughters of the American Revolution will meet May 1 at 11 a.m. at Gordonsville United Methodist Church. A $13.50 luncheon reservation check needs to be received by the chapter treasurer by April 26. The program, “DAR… What it means to my life - The Significance of the DAR Insignia,” will be presented by Judy Surber, District VI Director. The Chapter Memorial Service will be conducted by the chaplain.

A church rummage sale will be held Saturday, May 3 from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Stanardsville Baptist Church fellowship hall, lower level, door #6; follow signs. Start your morning with a ham or sausage biscuit and browse a wide variety of household items including furniture, books, toys and other items. Also spring/summer clothing for infants through adults. Sale to benefit the Women’s Missionary Union missions projects.

A golf tournament will be held at Greene Hills Country Club, Stanardsville, May 5 at 12-noon to benefit the Adam Fargo Memorial Field House, sponsored by William Monroe High School Community Service Club. All proceeds from this tournament will go directly to the field house funding. The money raised will first go towards installing a heating and cooling system, and then to finishing the remainder of the building. JABA Greene County Senior Center is holding a flea market fundraiser Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. to noon in the upper parking lot behind the JABA/Library building and the Lafayette Hotel just off Main Street in Stanardsville.
