September
During the month of September the Greene County Food Bank is requesting donations of canned vegetables. Donations can be dropped off at Social Services, 10009 Spotswood Trail (old Rt. 33), Stanardsville, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Your tax-deductible money donations to the food bank can be mailed to the Woman’s Club of Greene County, P. September 4
The Greene Library Book Discussion Group will meet Thursday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. The book “A Fine Balance” by Rohinton Mistry will be discussed. In India during the mid-1970s, after a “state of internal emergency” is declared, four very different people - a widowed seamstress, a student, and a man and his nephew who have fled their village’s caste violence - find their lives becoming inextricably intertwined.

Greene County Singers will begin practice Thursday, Sept. 4 at Stanardsville United Methodist Church from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; concerts Dec. 7. All interested adults are welcome; call 985-7194 or 985-4426.

The Hi-Horse Cloggers will start a beginner’s class Thursday, Sept. 4 from 7-8 p.m. at Greene County Primary School cafeteria. The first night will be an orientation class for all ages. For more information contact Evelyn Joann Shifflett at 434-985-7613.

September 5
The William Monroe High School Sports Booster Club will be hosting their third annual Dragonfest community picnic and fun event Friday, Sept. 5 from 5-7 p.m. on the blacktop behind Greene County Primary School in Stanardsville. There is no entrance fee to attend Dragonfest and we will offer a pork barbecue dinner for $5 or a hot dog dinner for $4. All dinners include macaroni salad, chips, a cookie and a drink. There will be lots of entertainment including a tug-of-war, take a chance at dunking a school teacher in the dunking booth or win a nice prize at the spinning wheel. You don’t want to miss the action at Dragonfest 2008! The WMHS football team will be hosting the Madison Mountaineers at 7:30 p.m. at the football stadium.

September 8
The Madison Choral Society, directed by Martha Mikula, will begin rehearsals for their fall program Monday, Sept. 8 from 7-9:15 p.m. at the Madison United Methodist Church, Main Street of Madison. The major work for this concert will be Kirke Mechem’s “The Seven Joys of Christmas.“ There will also be some traditional songs of Mary and Christmas Spirituals. No audition is required but some music experience is helpful. Won’t you join us in bringing quality sacred music concerts to our community. The Evergreen Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at Evergreen Brethren Church. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Want to polish your green thumb and serve your community? Become a Master Gardener; classes are forming now. Classes will be held Mondays and Thursdays, 8:30-11:30 a.m. Sept. 8-Nov. 10. Auditions for the Piedmont Virginia Community College theatre productions of “43 Plays for 43 Presidents” and the world premier of John Carden’s “Fabulous Flavio” will be held Sept. 9-10 and 3-4 respectively, at 7 p.m. on the Main Stage of the V. Earl Dickinson Building.

September 11/November 13
Blood is needed! The Women’s Committee of Greene County Farm Bureau is sponsoring blood drives Sept. 11 from 3-7 p.m. and Nov. 13 from 3-7 p.m. inside Stanardsville Firehouse. Please donate - you may save a life.

September 13
A yard sale and silent auction will be held Saturday, Sept. 13 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Madison Church of the Brethren. Breakfast and lunch items will be available.

The Montpelier Chapter of National Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, for a luncheon meeting at Hebron Lutheran Church, Madison. Bring a covered-dish to share. The program will be presented by Betty Lynn Yowell, American History Chairman and the American History Scholars from Madison County High School. Members are asked to bring paperback books to be taken to McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond as a veteran project.

The Greene County Taxpayers Association, Inc. will hold a yard sale Sept. 13 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion/Taxpayers Building, Rt. 230, Stanardsville. There will be something for everyone; food available for purchase. Rain or shine.

September 14
The annual family reunion of James Lewis and Mertie Mae Moubray will be held Sept. 14 at Porterfield Park Shelter in Orange. The event will begin at 11 a.m. and everyone is asked to bring a covered-dish and beverage.

September 20
Charlottesville Swing Dance Society offers a high-energy evening of swing dancing along with a variety of other dance favorites on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Municipal Arts Center, 1119 5th St. SW in Charlottesville. The Marshall Watson Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. to benefit scholarships for William Monroe High School; four $1,000 scholarships awarded each year. October 25
Doe Club Annual Craft Show will be held Saturday, Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Elks Club, 389 Elk Drive, Charlottesville, Pantops area.

Volunteers needed for Greene County Parks and Recreation Department.  Some duties are seasonal and others occur throughout the year. So, if you have a day now and then and would like to become a GCPR volunteer please contact Julius Bates at 434-985-5226.

Greene Care Clinic, the free clinic, is open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12-noon. We are located at 39 Stanard Street, Stanardsville, next to Skyline Cap. We accept walk-ins (Thursday’s preferred) or call 985-7000 for an appointment. We help you obtain all medications for diabetes, hypertension and other chronic illnesses. Please bring proof of where you live and your income to the first visit. The Greene County Historical Society Museum, Court Square, is open on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come see the exhibits and use the genealogy database on family research.

Are you a teen Mom? Have you heard of teen MOPS? We are planning a new Teen Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) group in Orange. Join us for Preschool Storytime at Greene County Library every Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. for ages 2-5 with siblings welcome. Enjoy lots of stories, songs, finger-plays and puppet shows, with a craft each week that your child can take home. No registration necessary.

The JABA Greene County Senior Center meets every Tuesday and Wednesday in the Senior Center/Library Building, Main St., Stanardsville, from 8 a.m. to noon. The program includes lunch, nurse visits, health and nutrition info, bingo, shopping trips, musical entertainment and the Craft Club on Wednesday afternoons.
