Aug. 1-31
During the month of August the Greene County Food Bank is requesting donations of canned fruit. Donations can be dropped off at Social Services, 10009 Spotswood Trail (old Rt. 33), Stanardsville, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Your tax-deductible money donations to the food bank can be mailed to the Woman’s Club of Greene County, P. O. Box 352, Stanardsville, VA 22973. For more information, contact Nancy at 985-5063.

August 1, 4. 11 & 18
The 2008 fall sports tryout dates: High school football (9-12 graders) Aug. 1 from 5-9 p.m. at Field House; Golf (8-12 graders) Aug. 1 at Greene Hills Country Club, bring proper attire; varsity and JV volleyball (8-12 graders) Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. to 12-noon at high school gym; competition cheerleading Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. to 12-noon in high school cafeteria. Middle School volleyball tryouts are Aug. 11 from 5-7 p.m. in the Middle School gym and Middle School football Aug. 18 from 3:30-5:30 at the Field House.

August 2
A lawn party will be held Saturday, Aug. 2 at Shiloh Church of the Brethren on Middle River Road, Rt. 667 starting at 4 p.m. The auction begins at 6 p.m. and there will be gospel music provided by “Jerusalem Ridge.“ Also, we will have available for purchase country ham and mutton sandwiches, fried chicken, hot dogs, pies, cakes, cookies and drinks.

Yard sale will be held Saturday, Aug. 2 at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church Shelter from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come for great bargains.

August 3
Lawson Family Reunion will be held Aug. 3 at Nathanael Greene Elementary School on Rt. 33, Stanardsville. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m.; come and bring a picnic basket.

August 4
Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting will be held Aug. 4 in the VA Board Meeting Room at 7 p.m. at Greene County Administration Building in Stanardsville. Guest speaker will be from the City of Charlottesville Parks and Leisure Services. All meetings are open to the public.

August 5
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 6-9 p.m. All are invited and children are especially encouraged to attend.

The Ruckersville Citizens Council meets Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. in Ruckersville Fire Hall with Bill Wanner from Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission as guest. He will provide information regarding the Multimodal Transportation Planning Grant recently awarded by VDOT to Greene County and on the update of Greene County Comprehensive Plan.  985-3870.

August 7
The Greene County Library Book Discussion Group meets Thursday, Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. We will be discussing “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius” by Dave Eggers. Mr. Eggers is a respected magazine editor/founder and onetime spokesman for Generation X, offers a satiric, eloquent, and thoroughly tradition-shattering memoir that discusses the death of his parents from cancer, his raising a younger brother and more.

August 9
Join your friends for the sixth annual community yard sale at the fairgrounds on Rt. 230 on Saturday, Aug. 9 from 8 a.m. to 12-noon with set-up beginning at 7 a.m. Cost is $10 for a regular spot and $15 for a large drive-through spot where you can sell right from your vehicle. There is plenty of parking and easy in and out for customers. Contact Ed Lumadue for information at 985-3226.

August 10-16
Fair fun, enter the pet rock contest; this will be held in the livestock area at the Greene County Fair. The 4-H Pet Club is the sponsor and you can enter the contest if you are from five years old to adults. For rules and more information please pick up a fair booklet at the Extension Office or Greene County Record. Entry times are Sunday, Aug. 10 from 3-6 p.m. and Monday, Aug. 11 from 4-7 p.m. Call Rita if you have questions, 985-2729 or 249-2730.

Aug. 12-16

Stop by the 4-H Pet Club booth at the Greene County Fair located in the livestock area. There will be Sandy Candy, sodas, face and nail painting, kid’s raffles, pet rocks as well as a raffle for RADA Cutlery for the adults and more.  On Aug. 12, we will have “create your own” ceramic handprints for sale. These will be available for pick-up on Aug.16. We also will have two autographed copies of Martha Stewart books that will be auctioned off during the Livestock Auction, around 8:15pm. Advertise your business at the Greene County Fair Aug. 12-16; over 15,000 people attend Greene’s largest gathering of the year. Space is 10x10 feet in the 125 ft. tent; electric and lighting provided. This maximum exposure over five days costs $125 and includes 10 free passes to the fair. Contact Ed Lumadue at 985-3226 for information and reservations. The tent was completely full last year; so don’t delay.

The Greene County Ruritans upcoming Greene County Fair will once again be sponsoring horseshoes Everyone is welcome to enter the nightly competition; registration begins at 6 p.m. The Ruritans will be selling raffle tickets at $2 each for a chance to win a five-burner gas grill. The drawing will be held at the fair at 9 p.m.; you don’t need to be present to win. They will also have cookbooks on hand to sell for $10 each. All proceeds from the raffle tickets benefit the ongoing improvements at the Greene County Community Park, so this is a great way to support our community.

The Greene County Fair admission fees for Tuesday-Saturday: adults 13-61 $5; senior citizens 62+ $4; children six-12 $3 and five and under, free. Weekly tickets will be on sale Sunday from 3-6 p.m. and Monday 4-7 p.m. at the fairgrounds.  The weekly pass for children six-12 is $12, adults 13-61 $20 and senior citizens 62+ $15. Weekly passes must be purchased on Tuesday or prior to closing Tuesday night.

August 13
Fast-pitch Softball, Tournament Fall Ball; the Scorchers will hold tryouts/registration Wednesday, Aug. 13 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Orange County High School softball fields for ages 10U, 12U, 14U and 16U. August 14
Stanardsville Volunteer Fire Department is in need of free dirt for our building addition project. Anyone having loads of dirt, please contact president Doug Clay at 960-9997 or assistant chief Jason Tooley at 242-4903.
