During the month of July, the Greene County Food Bank is requesting donations of canned green beans and canned corn. Donations can be dropped off at Social Services, 10009 Spotswood Trail (old Rt. 33), Stanardsville, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Your tax-deductible money donations to the food bank can be mailed to the Woman’s Club of Greene County, P. Mark Templeton and Pocket Change, a popular bluegrass band, will be in concert Saturday, July 19 at 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 735 Park Street, Charlottesville. All tickets are $10; proceeds benefit Grace Baptist Church building fund. For details call 434-975-0260.

The annual Open Mic night of the Blue Ridge Chapter, Virginia Writers’ Club, will open Wednesday, July 23 2008 in the meeting room of the North side library at Albemarle Square at 7pm. this gathering is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Writers of fiction, non fiction and poetry from the chapter will read their own work.
The Blue Ridge Chapter of Virginia Writers’ Club serves writers from the city of Charlottesville, And counties of Albemarle, Augusta, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison Nelson and Orange. A lawn party will be held Saturday, Aug. 2 at Shiloh Church of the Brethren, Middle River Road, Rt. 667 starting at 4 p.m. The auction begins at 6 p.m. and there will be gospel music provided by Jerusalem Ridge. Also, we will have available for purchase country ham and mutton sandwiches, fried chicken, hot dogs, pies, cakes, cookies and drinks. Hope to see you there.

Greene County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the National Night Out on Aug. 5 from 6-9 p.m. All are invited and children are especially encouraged to attend.
The Ruckersville Citizens Council meets Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. in Ruckersville Fire Hall with Bill Wanner from Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission as guest. He will provide information regarding the Multimodal Transportation Planning Grant recently awarded by VDOT to Greene County and on the update of Greene County Comprehensive Plan. Greene Library Book Discussion Group meets Thursday, Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius” by Dave Eggers is a respected magazine editor/founder and onetime spokesman for Generation X offers a satiric, eloquent, and thoroughly tradition-shattering memoir that discusses the deaths of his parents from cancer, his raising his younger brother and more.

Join your friends for the sixth annual community yard sale at the fairgrounds on Rt. 230 on Saturday, Aug. 9 from 8 a.m. to 12-noon with set-up beginning at 7 a.m. Cost is $10 for regular spot and $15 for large drive-through spot where you can sell right from you vehicle. Stop by the 4-H Pet Club booth at the Greene County Fair located in the livestock area. There will be sandy candy, sodas, RADA raffles, kid raffles, pet rocks and more. Advertise your business at the Greene County Fair Aug. 12-16; over 15,000 people attend Greene’s largest gathering of the year. Space is 10x10 feet in the 125 ft. tent. Electric and lighting provided. This maximum exposure over five days costs $125 and includes 10 free passes to the fair. Contact Ed Lumadue at 985-3226 for information and reservations. The tent was completely full last year; so don’t delay.

Greene Care Clinic, the free clinic, is open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12-noon. We are located at 39 Stanard Street, Stanardsville, next to Skyline Cap. We accept walk-ins (Thursday’s preferred) or call 985-7000 for an appointment. We help you obtain all medications for diabetes, hypertension and other chronic illnesses. Please bring proof of where you live and your income at the first visit. Services are free, but donations are welcome.
JABA’s Greene County Community Center is in need of volunteers to teach arts and crafts on Tuesday or Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. This could be once a week, every two weeks or once a month, whatever works for you. You don’t need to be a trained artist or a master crafter, but if you love arts and crafts, and enjoy teaching the basics call Barbara Berger, Volunteer Coordinator or Sandra Davis, Center Supervisors at 434-985-2047.
The Greene County Historical Society Museum, Court Square, is open on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come see the exhibits and use the genealogy database on family research.
Are you a teen Mom? Have you heard of teen MOPS? We are planning a new Teen Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) group in Orange. The JABA Greene County Senior Center meets every Tuesday and Wednesday in the Senior Center/Library Building, Main St., Stanardsville, from 8 a.m. to noon. The program includes lunch, nurse visits, health and nutrition info, bingo, shopping trips, musical entertainment and the Craft Club on Wednesday afternoons.
