Greene County Library’s The Big Read, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, is Thursday, April 10 at 7 p.m. Nick Patler, author and historian, will speak on “Killing the Mockingbird: Historical and Contemporary Efforts to Ban To Kill a Mockingbird.“
April 11
Spanish classes, sponsored by International-community.org, will be offered every Friday, from 5-6 p.m. beginning April 11 at The church, 2504 Amicus Rd., Stanardsville. Beginners level classes taught by bilingual Spanish teacher from Blue Ridge School. For more information and to register, contact 985-7895.

The second alumni day scheduled for April 12 has been canceled.
The Montpelier Daughters of the American Revolution will meet Saturday, April 12, at 10 a.m. at Madison Presbyterian Church. A $6 brunch reservation check needs to be received by chapter treasurer by April 5. The program “My Trip to Normandy” will be presented by Montpelier chapter member, Cornelia Koeppel.
Cow patty bingo will be held at William Monroe High School football practice field April 12 at 12-noon. The event will support the William Monroe football team. Bingo spots purchased up to 12-noon that day. First prize is $200, second $100 cash and third is $50 cash. Buy one square for $5, 2 for $8 or 3 for $10. Questions, call 985-1397.
There will be a meeting at Mt. Paran Cemetery for all interested relatives and friends Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m. It is important that you attend.

The Red Cross will be offering free CPR courses (regular price is $75 per person) Saturday, April 12, Standard First Aid and Adult CPR/AED and Saturday, April 26, Adult CPR/AED. The training courses are funded by a grant and are free to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations. Pre-registration required, call 434-979-7143 and ask for Brett Stauffer.

For the seventh year, the Greene County Ruritan Club is sponsoring a spring road cleanup week, April 12-19 with teams cleaning most of the two-lane country roads. A typical team of two will work each side of a road section of about two miles in about 2 to 3 hours; if you have more people it goes faster. This is a chance to get a road near you ready for spring and summer. Ask the neighbors to join in, it won’t take long and it will help provide unspoiled landscape in the best parts of Greene County. The week of April 13-19 is National Crime Victims Rights Week in honor of the week an exhibit will be on display at Greene County Library. Interesting information concerning victims of crime will be available, as well as handouts on the subject. Please take time to come by and visit the display and speak with Micki Watson, Victim Witness Assistance Director.

You are invited to the JABA Community Center, 222B Main Street, Stanardsville, for an open house from 9 a.m. to 12-noon on April 15. Lunch will be provided.

A free Greene County TRIAD Workshop for all seniors over 50 years old will be at 10 a.m. April 16 at 222 Main St., Library Building, Stanardsville. Guest speaker will be Bill Theo speaking on “Keeping History Safe.“ If you have questions call Beverly at 434-990-0225.

Wes Iseli’s Magic and Illusion Show is Friday, April 18 at William Monroe High School Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m., sponsored by Ruckersville Elementary School. Admission is $6 per person, five and under free; advance tickets are $5 and available at RES. Food will be available for purchase and there will be a bake sale.

Greene County Department of Social Services’ free training - Child Care Provider In-service with two new classes to be held at Greene County Child Care Center, 204 New Life Drive, Ruckersville. Y Art? Everybody Wins Discipline will be held Saturday, April 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; a hot topic for all child care providers. The Deanes will have a bluegrass gospel music benefit concert for Sue Lam Saturday, April 19, at William Monroe High School, Stanardsville, at 7 p.m. Sue has had stem cell transplant treatment for Amyloidosis (a blood disorder) at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and your donations will help with the expenses of the treatment. Saturday, April 19, from 5-7 p.m. Habitat for Humanity of Greene County welcomes you to an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner at Stanardsville Baptist Church, Rt. 230, one block north of Business 33 in downtown Stanardsville. Menu includes spaghetti, meatballs, macaroni and cheese, salad, garlic bread, drink and dessert at $7 for adults, children 2 to 6, $4 and under 2, free.

The Greene County Historical Society’s annual meeting for all members will be April 19 at 4 p.m. at Greene County Courthouse. There will be a program and election of officers and board members. The public is invited. The program is “Memories of Main Street” Residents of Stanardsville during the 1930s through 1950s will reminisce about life along Main Street and in the town.
The Greene County Democratic Committee will hold an unassembled caucus Saturday, April 19 from noon to 2 p.m. in the Stanardsville Town Hall, to elect three delegates and two alternates to the 5th Congressional District Democratic Convention on May 17 and the State Democratic Convention on June 14. Any Democrat who is a registered voter in Greene and who wishes to seek election as a delegate or alternate must pre-file a declaration of candidacy by April 14 with the Greene County Democratic Committee, P.O.
