April 3-30
During the month of April, the Greene County Food Bank is requesting donations of canned vegetables and canned fruits. Donations can be dropped off at Social Services at 10009 Spotswood Trail (old Rt. 33), Stanardsville, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Your tax-deductible money donations for the food bank can be mailed to the Woman’s Club of Greene County, P.O. Box 352, Stanardsville, VA 22973. For more information, contact Nancy at 985-5063.

April 3
Volunteers needed to help care for patients at Greene Care Clinic. Receptionists needed Wednesdays and Thursdays 8:30 a.m. to 12-noon to answer phones, pull medical records and check-in patients; also financial screeners are needed. Call 985-7000 to help us provide a very important service to the community.

Kindergarten registration will be held Thursday, April 3, from 3:45-6:30 p.m. Bring your child, if he or she will be five years old before October 1, 2008, with his/her birth certificate and social security number. Physical forms and immunization information will be given to you that evening. Registration will be held at both, Greene County Primary and Ruckersville Elementary. Please call the school if you have further questions.

The Book Discussion Group meets Thursday, April 3 at 7 p.m. at Greene County Library. “The Last Chinese Chef” by Nicole Mones - Struggling to get back on her feet in the wake of her husband’s premature death and stunned by a paternity suit against her husband’s estate, food writer Maggie McElroy plans a trip to China to investigate the claim and to profile rising chef Sam Liang, who introduces her to the Chinese concept of food, while drawing her into his extended family and helping her come to terms with her life.

April 4-6
Shenandoah Valley Coin and Stamp Show will be held at Weyers Cave Community Center, I-81 exit 235, 2 miles east on VA 256, Rockingham County, on April 4, 12-noon-5 p.m., April 5, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and April 6, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sponsored by Weyers Cave Lions Club.

April 5
The Greene County Taxpayers Association, Inc. will hold a spaghetti dinner April 5, at the American Legion/GCTA Building on Rt. 230 from 4 to 7 p.m. The all-you-can-eat meal includes spaghetti, salad, beverage and dessert. Adults $6, children from 3 to 12 is $3 and those under 3, free. Come out and enjoy the good food and fellowship.

Entrée Act Theater Group will be hosting a Dinner Theater at Blue Ridge Café in the banquet room Saturday, April 5. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Tories, the Famous Lee Family of Virginia is Stoking the Fires of the Revolution! Murder Spies and Wigs bound in an interactive murder-mystery play presented by Entrée Act.

April 6
The Greene County Historical Society’s annual dinner gathering will be April 6 at Rosebrook Inn at 4 p.m. Cost is $27 per person. For more information call 985-2382.

April 8
The regular meeting of Rippin Run Garden Club will be held April 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Greene County Extension Office. The program will be on Pruning with Ralph Hall as guest speaker. For more information call Janice Atkinson at 985-1522.

The Greene County Lions Club and Virginia Blood Services invite you to renew your commitment to keeping our area blood supply at vital levels by donating blood. Their next blood drive is Tuesday, April 8, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Greene County Rescue Squad building, Rt. 33, Stanardsville. To make an appointment, call Lion Mick Carrier, 985-6648. All blood types are needed. Each unit of blood can save as many as three lives. Give the gift of life; donate blood.

April 10
Greene County Library’s The Big Read, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, is Thursday, April 10 at 7 p.m. Nick Patler, author and historian, will speak on “Killing the Mockingbird: Historical and Contemporary Efforts to Ban To Kill a Mockingbird.“

April 12
Calling all past William Monroe High School Athletes! The second alumni day will be April 12 and we need your help. Please contact Katie Brunelle at or call 985-1397 if you are a William Monroe High School alumni, or know any alumni. We will have odd years versus even years, coached by some of Monroe’s biggest legends. All sports are included, and will be scheduled throughout the day, concluding with a dinner. Contact me and stay tuned for the latest news on this event. We hope to have a great day full of fun, memories, and lots of catching up.

The Montpelier Daughters of the American Revolution will meet Saturday, April 12, at 10 a.m. at Madison Presbyterian Church. A $6 brunch reservation check needs to be received by chapter treasurer by April 5. The program “My Trip to Normandy” will be presented by Montpelier chapter member, Cornelia Koeppel.

April 12 & 26
The Red Cross will be offering free CPR courses (regular price is $75 per person) Saturday, April 12, Standard First Aid and Adult CPR/AED and Saturday, April 26, Adult CPR/AED. The training courses are funded by a grant and are free to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations. Pre-registration required, call 434-979-7143 and ask for Brett Stauffer.

April 12-19
For the seventh year, the Greene County Ruritan Club is sponsoring a spring road cleanup week, April 12-19 with teams cleaning most of the two-lane country roads. A typical team of two will work each side of a road section of about two miles in about 2 to 3 hours; if you have more people it goes faster. While many road sections will be cleaned, additional teams are needed. This is a chance to get a road near you ready for spring and summer. Call Carl Schmitt at 985-9815 to participate.

April 15-17
National Crime Victims Rights Week is April 13-19, 2008. On April 15th thru the 17th, 2008 in honor Victim Rights Week, an exhibit will be on display at the Greene County Library. Interesting information concerning victims of crime will be available, as well as handouts on the subject. Micki Watson,Victim Witness Assistance Director, will be on hand.

April 16
A free Greene County TRIAD Workshop for all seniors over 50 years old will be April 16 at 222 Main St., Library Building, Stanardsville. Guest speaker will be from Greene County Historical Society. If you have questions call Beverly at 434-990-0225.

April 18
Wes Iseli’s Magic and Illusion Show is Friday, April 18 at William Monroe High School Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m., sponsored by Ruckersville Elementary School. Admission is $6 per person, five and under free; advance tickets are $5 and available at RES. Food will be available for purchase and there will be a bake sale.


The Greene County Historical Society’s annual meeting for all members will be April 19 at 4 p.m. at Greene County Courthouse. More information about the program will be published later.

The Greene County Virginia Area Homeschoolers is holding an International Fair (similar to a science fair but with countries instead of experiments) April 19 at 6 p.m. at Spring Hill Baptist . For more information, visit http://www.gcvah.info.
