Oct. 9-Oct 18
GCYC fall ball season at the Youth Center will consist of four clinics on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12-noon with possibility of a scrimmage game after instruction. These clinics will continue through October 18. Anyone already registered for fall ball can call for information and if you are interested in attending please call Lori at 409-1577.

October 9-December 18
Preschool Storytime: Thursdays, Oct. 9-Dec. 18, 10:30 a.m. for ages 2-5. No registration required; join us for songs, finger plays, books, and flannel board stories. Storytime concludes with a simple craft your child can take home each week. Siblings welcome. Storytimes in Oct.-Dare to be scared! Come hear some not too scary stories. We will also read books about community helpers and autumn. Decorate your own pumpkin on Oct. 30. The Puppet show: Rainbow’s Creatures Great and Small! is Thursday, Oct. 16, 10:30 a.m. for all ages.

Oct.9-Oct. 26
Fellowship Baptist Church, 725 Gate Road, Madison, will be hosting the “One Nation Under God” program each Sunday through Oct. 26. Children, teens and adults can come together to celebrate our American history and heritage that is so often left out in our public schools and arenas. The Big Ball Tournament to benefit the youth of Greene County will be held Saturday, Oct. 11 starting at 9 a.m. at Greene County Youth Center. Four game guaranteed, top two teams in each bracket go to double elimination or the championship. Depending on how many teams sign up it may turn into a two-day tournament. The Greene County Taxpayers Assoc. Inc. will have a Spaghetti dinner on the 11th of October from 4:00pm. to 7:00pm. at the American Legion/Taxpayers Bldg. Tr. 230. Spaghetti, Salad, bread, dessert, and drink. Adult $6.00, children 3 to 12, $3.00, and under 3 free. “Come out and join us for good food and fellowship.“

Emmanuel Christian Center (ECC) will be sponsoring a car wash at the church on Saturday, Oct. 11 starting at 8:00am-until. Also, a quilt raffle will take place. All donations and proceeds will benefit “Lifeline Community and Youth Center.“ All are welcome!
           
Apples and Pumpkins for sale this weekend!  The Blue Ridge Heat 12 and under fast pitch team, a non-profit organization, will be selling Graves Mountain apples this Saturday October 11th from 8:00a.m.-5:00p.m. and Sunday October 12th from 9:00a.m. -3:00p.m.  at the primary school parking lot across from Great Valu.  Select your own apples from the crates.  Choose from a variety including Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Winesap, etc.  The team will also be selling pumpkins in time for Halloween and having a yard and bake sale at this location.  Come out and support these girls in this fundraising event which will help them to purchase much needed equipment and continue to play a sport they love.  The Blue Ridge Heat team relies on support from the community to help fund their expenses for the year.  For more information contact Amy at 531-7582

GRACE (Greene Alliance of Church and Community Efforts) will be sponsoring an Angel Tree Program designed to help families provide gifts for their children ages infant to 17; families do need to register and qualify by household income. Please note: This program is designed to help families that have no other means of providing Christmas gifts for their children. If you typically receive help from friends, family members, etc. please do not sign up for this program; we would like to help as many children as possible. You must bring your DBT card and/or your household income pay stub to the GRACE Office on Monday, Oct. 13 or Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Only referrals from DSS will be accepted after registration. Looking for the perfect character to play this Halloween? How about a superhero? It’s quick and easy. You can save three lives with one donation of blood. The Greene County Lions Club and Virginia Blood Services urge you to be a lifesaving blood donor during their blood drive on Tuesday, October 14th, from 2:00pm. to 6:30pm. at the Greene County Rescue Squad building, old Route 33 in Stanardsville. October is Virginia Archaeology Month. George Whitewolf, Assistant Chief of the Monacan Indian Nation, will speak about Monacan culture past and present, in the 2nd annual joint meeting of the Greene County Historical Society and Greene County Library, October 16, at 7pm. in the Greene County Library meeting room, Stanardsville. The annual Battlefield/Piedmont Regional TRIAD Council is sponsoring the Senior Crime Prevention Conference at Madison Volunteer Firehouse, 1223 N. Saturday, October 18 a benefit dance will be held at the Dyke Volunteer Fire Department on Route 810, to benefit Luke Morris in his recovery from a spinal cord injury during a diving accident this past July.  The dance will be from 8pm-until midnight, DJ kickin’ Country will keep the music fun and going. Ice will be sold on site but bring your own refreshments. During the dance, raffle tickets will be sold for great prizes donated by local businesses and individuals. The last day to vote absentee in person is Saturday, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. In order to absentee vote, visit the Office of the Registrar of Voters in Stanardsville, 32 Stanard Street. You will need to show valid ID and have a reason for absentee voting, such as travel, work requirements, pilots or flight attendants, handicap, college or military service. Please note that if you are not able to come into the Registrar’s Office to vote in person, you can print an absentee ballot application at: http://www.sbe.virginia.gov and print an application and mail it to: Registrar, P.O. Box 341, Stanardsville, Virginia and then a ballot will be mailed to you.

Spaces are still available to artisans and crafters for the 33rd annual “Helping Hands” craft bazaar hosted by the Woman’s Club of Greene County from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1 at Ruckersville Elementary School. We are looking for vendors creating and selling handcrafted or handmade items to fill out our exhibitor spaces. GCPR Volunteers Needed: The Parks and Recreation Department is basically a two-person department. The scope of duties is such that there are opportunities for those wishing to assist the department’s programming as GCPR volunteers. Some duties are seasonal and others occur throughout the year. The department publishes flyers for all of its recreational offerings. Copies are all prepared in-house; thus, there is a considerable amount of copy work. For those with computer skills, registering participants in various programs is a possibility. For those with graphic skills, flyers need to be developed. Or, you could just help by answering the phones and greeting visitors. For those who prefer outdoor activities, the Park Pavilion needs to be maintained for those scheduling events, including family reunions, birthday and anniversary parties and various community and group outings. For those with athletic interests our fields need to be lined weekly for Saturday soccer games in the fall and again in the spring. For the walkers among us, we could use trail monitors who can walk our trails, remove debris and in general keep them clear and clean for use. So, if you have a day now and then and would like to become a GCPR volunteer please contact Julius Bates at 434-985-5226.

Greene Care Clinic, the free clinic, is open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12-noon. We are located at 39 Stanard Street, Stanardsville, next to Skyline Cap. We accept walk-ins (Thursday’s preferred) or call 985-7000 for an appointment. We help you obtain all medications for diabetes, hypertension and other chronic illnesses. Please bring proof of where you live and your income to the first visit. Services are free, but donations are welcome.

JABA’s Greene County Community Center is in need of volunteers to teach arts and crafts on Tuesday or Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. This could be once a week, every two weeks or once a month, whatever works for you. You don’t need to be a trained artist or a master crafter, but if you love arts and crafts, and enjoy teaching the basics call Barbara Berger, Volunteer Coordinator or Sandra Davis, Center Supervisors at 434-985-2047.
