Psalm 42 is called a maschil in the Hebrew language, which means an instruction in our English language. With the same message, Psalm 43 is a continuation of Psalm 42.
Both of these psalms are instructing us that there are times when our soul is cast down and full of unrest. In plain words, we all will go through times of depression and agitation.
In these two psalms, nine times the psalmist will inquire as to why he is having such an experience. He examines his past life and speaks of better days, and he believes there are brighter days ahead; but at present, a darkness has set in. The psalmist prays for the Lord to send out His light and truth that it may lead him out of his present darkness. At the conclusion of these two psalms, he speaks of having a healthy countenance.
Could it be that the reason God allows us to experience periods of darkness is that we might learn to look to His word to be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Our circumstances can change, but God’s word does not. Therefore, trusting His words is the best medicine for a soul that is depressed and at unrest. So let us read the instructions, take the medicine, and the consequence will be a healthy countenance.
