Paul in writing to young Timothy, reflected on his life of ministry and concluded, “I have fought a good fight.” Yes, the Apostle Paul had stayed in the battle, had not retreated, nor had he compromised with the enemy.
Paul also stated, “I have finished my course.” Paul had indeed run a good race. He had persevered and had not allowed himself to be distracted from the course that the Lord had called him to run. Paul knew that at the end of his course was the Lord, the righteous judge to whom he would give an account. Furthermore, he realized that a crown was awaiting him once he had concluded his earthly journey.
Not only was the Apostle Paul able to say, “I have fought a good fight” and “I have finished my course,” but he was also able to say to young Timothy, “I have kept the faith.” Paul had the faith that comes from listening to God’s word and applying it to one’s own life. He had believed that God’s word was true and he had lived in the promise that our Lord would one day return.
Paul was able to exhort the brethren of his day, as well as ours, by reminding Timothy that “them also that love (Jesus) appearing” will also receive a crown. Those that genuinely believe our Lord is soon returning will fight a good fight, finish their course, and keep the faith.
Salvation is a gift of God, but the crown of righteousness is for those who love His appearing (ref. II Timothy 4:7-8
