“Till I come, give attendance to reading…, I Timothy 4:13. Public reading of the scriptures was a common practice in both the Old Testament and the New. The Bible records that Ezra read from the book of the law of Moses from morning until midday, and the people were attentive. In the New Testament, it is said that Jesus had a custom of going into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and reading the scriptures publicly.
Now in the days of the Old and New Testament, not everyone had access to the scriptures; but today, especially here in America, everyone can own his own Bible. Yes, there should be the public reading of the scriptures in our churches; and we should follow along as we listen in our own Bibles. In other words, carry your Bible to church; but do not leave it on the pew, for we need to privately read in it every day.
“Give attendance to reading” is not a suggestion, but a command. Obedience to God’s word brings blessings so “give attendance to reading” God’s word and be blessed each and every day.
