To invest in the lives of our children and to prepare them to be the leaders of tomorrow is our best investment. To invest in our children, we need to see children as God sees them. In Psalm 127, we find an overall Biblical view of children that should be our overall view as well.
First, we see that “children are a heritage of the Lord and the fruit of the womb is His reward.” Not to tend that “fruit” (child) while in the womb and not to view that “fruit” as a “heritage” (gift from the Lord) is not to have a God-given view of children.
Secondly, we can see that children are “as arrows in the hand of a mighty man.” A “mighty man” (a great warrior) has the ability to direct his arrows. When we see that God has entrusted into our care our children and that we have the power and responsibility to direct their lives in the correct direction, we are seeing things from God’s viewpoint. Thirdly, we see in Psalm 127:5 that the “arrows” (the children) are kept in a “quiver.” Yes, we are to provide for them the protection and care they need. When we provide a safe haven and provide for our children’s needs, we are viewing children from a God-given perspective.
Fourthly, we see our children one day as taking our place; for “they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.” One day, our children will have to take a stand for the Lord against the same enemies that seek to enslave and to destroy; and our children will need to be prepared. Our best investment is our children, and we only have a limited time to protect, direct, and provide for that investment. Let us invest in our best investment.
