“Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions?” Song of Solomon 1:7. This question was asked by one who loved her shepherd. She knew her shepherd had a flock, and she knew that there were flocks whom were turning aside after other shepherds; but she desired to be fed by her shepherd and find the rest that he would give.
In the New Testament, Jesus is the Good Shepherd; and His sheep bear His voice and follow Him (ref. John 10). Also Jesus said, “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls,” Matthew 11:28-29.
Now the application of the above Scriptures is that if we do not wish to turn aside from following the Lord, then we need to listen to His word and allow it to feed our souls and allow it to give us the rest that we can only have by learning of Him.
The shepherds who turn aside and take their flocks with them are those who are feeding their flocks with God’s word. Substitutes for sound Biblical preaching and teaching never bring true satisfaction. Are you being fed and have you found rest?
